Porcelain mug with Evil Eyes and the Greek key design

Porcelain mug decorated with evil eyes and meaders.

Porcelain mug decorated with evil eyes and meaders.

The evil eye, also known as “mati”,  a protection symbol. In Greek culture the evil eye is a curse thought to be given by a malicious glare that can cause bad luck or loss. The myth of the evil eye is predicated on the fact that others could be envious of your life. So the idea that too much fortune, frame, or praise can bring lots of attention to yourself (and thus, many eyes) means that you're more likely to catch the gaze of someone knowingly (or unknowingly) giving you the evil eye. So in order to bestow the curse one has to wear or carrie an amulet, that usually takes the form of a blue eye because traditionally, in the Aegean Region, the light-colored eyes, such as green eyes and especially blue eyes, which are relatively rare in this area, are thought to bestow the curse. The evil eye brings good luck and protects you from any ill-will that could otherwise have a negative effect on your well-being or your life in general.

Furtheremore, the meander or meandros (Greek: Μαίανδρος) is a decorative motif constructed from a continuous line, also known as the Greek fret or Greek key design.  It was named after the river Meander in Asia Minor, a river with many twists, mentioned in Homer's Iliad
Meanders were common decorative elements in Greek and Roman art, appearing
in many architectural friezes, in bands on the pottery of ancient Greece from the Geometric Period onwards.
It symbolises infinity, unity and the eternal flow of things. Meander was also used as a symbol of the unbreakable bond of friendship, love and devotion and that is the reason why it is usually offered as marriage gift.
