Handmade greek alabaster statue of Hermes and the infant Dionysus, replica of the original 4th century BC sculpture which is mostly known as the Hermes of Praxiteles, discovered in 1877 in the ruins of the Temple of Hera, Olympia, in Greece. The original marble sculpture, one of the most significant works of ancient greek art, is currenlty on permanent display at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, in Peloponnese.
In Ancient Greek religion and Mythology Dionysus, also known as Bacchus, was the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and wine, of fertility, orchards and fruit, vegetation, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre. His origins are uncertain, though it is most probable that he was born in Thrace (northern Greece), travelled abroad, and arrived in Greece as a foreigner, evidence from the Mycenaean period of Greek history shows that he is one of Greece's oldest attested gods.
According to the Myth, Zeus gave the infant Dionysus to the care of Hermes. The statue potrayes Hermes, one of the Olympian deities and protector of human heralds, travellers, thieves, merchants, and orators, holding the baby Dionysus.
The statue is traditionally attributed to Praxiteles, the most renowned sculpture of Athens of the 4th century BC.
