Handmade greek alabaster statue of Dionysos, the ancient greek god of wine and theatre

Handmade greek alabaster statue of Dionysos, the ancient greek god of wine and theater. An amazing souvenir from Greece!

In Ancient Greek religion and Mythology Dionysus, also known as Bacchus, was the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and wine, of fertility, orchards and fruit, vegetation, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre. His origins are uncertain, though it is most probable that he was born in Thrace (northern Greece), travelled abroad, and arrived in Greece as a foreigner, evidence from the Mycenaean period of Greek history shows that he is one of Greece's oldest attested gods.

He is most renowned as the god of wine and theater. Wine played an important role in Greek culture, and the cult of Dionysus was the main religious focus surrounding its consumption. The wine but also the grapes that produced it were seen as not only a gift of the god, but a symbolic incarnation of him on earth. He was not the god of drunkenness, but his cult was mostly focused on the correct consumption of wine, which could ease suffering and bring joy, as well as inspire divine madness distinct from drunkenness.
Performance art and drama were also central to his religion, and its festivals were the initial driving force behind the development of theatre.

In the ancient and in modern art the god is usually portrayed holding on his hand his thyrsus, a wand or staff of giant fennel covered with ivy vines and leaves sometimes wound with taeniae and topped with a pine cone  and dripping with honey, is both a beneficent wand and a weapon used to destroy those who oppose his cult and the freedoms he represents.
He is also frequently accompanied by his female followers, the maenads who were the most significant members of the Thiasus, the god's retinue. Their name literally translates as raving ones.
