The Erechtheion (Erechtheum) is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens in Greece which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. It was built between 421 and 406 BC probably by the architect named Mnesicles. Its name derives from a shrine dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Erichthonius.
On the south side of Erechtheion, there is the famous Porch of the Maidens, with six draped female figures (caryatids) as supporting columns. A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means maidens of Karyai, an ancient town of Peloponnese.
