The lekythos depicts a famous scene of Homer’s epic poem Odyssey in which Odysseus, king of Ithaca, on his long voyage home following the Trojan War, confronted the Sirens. The Sirens were dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.
However, Odysseus was curious as to what the Sirens sang to him and thus he ordered his sailors plug their ears with beeswax and tie him to the mast. After hearing their beautiful song, he beged his sailors to untie him but they didn't obey to his orders. When they had passed out of earshot, Odysseus demonstrated with his frowns to be released.
