Hand-painted black-figure lekythos depicting a famous scene of Homer’s epic poem Iliad in which Achilles tries his new armor made by Hephaestus and brought to him by his mother, Thetis.

During the last year of the ten-year Trojan war, Patroclus, Achilles’s beloved friend, was killed by Hector, while wearing Achilles’s armor. After killing Patroclus, Hector stripped the armor of his body and kept it for himself leaving Achilles in deep grief for the lost of his friend and without an armor. After these events, Thetis comes to console her son in his grief and she vows to get him a new armor made by Hephaestus, the god of blacksmith and craftsmen, and until she does so, she begs him not to arm himself for battle until he sees her coming back. Thetis turns to Hephaestus and begs him to make an armor for her son. Hepheastus accepts to help her and makes the armor which includes a splendid shield, a breastplate, a helmet, and greaves.
